“THE STEPHENSON” NAME is back in Cameron Village.
The Stephenson name has had a fond presence in Raleigh history since 1907. What began as a Downtown variety store specializing in musical instruments, became a hub for music and community throughout the 20th century. Many still today fondly remember music lessons, friendly-faces, and neighborly banter in a place that always felt like home.
Today, we use these recollections to help piece together a small tribute to this musical community-space and its role in Cameron Village's long history.
Like many businesses, Stephenson Music Company relocated to the suburbs of the newly established, Cameron Village from Downtown in the mid-1950s. There were a variety of instruments and friendly lessons available from the experts at Stephenson's. Many remember the store as a second home - where lovers of music, both playing and listening, gathered.

Crowded Aisles on a Busy Day at the Stephenson
While the official record is a little murky, the story of Stephenson Music Company is still told by local experts and previous patrons who used to regularly stop in. Local Raleigh blogs have done a lot to keep the memories alive, with many readers still sharing their stories. The store remained in Cameron Village until the late 1960s, before moving back to Downtown (thankfully, only a couple miles down the road). Then, in the mid-1970's it made Crabtree Valley Mall home. Regardless of address, the impact of Stephenson Music Company can not be understated on the Raleigh community and the number of individuals who fondly remember.
Now in 2020, The Stephenson name has returned to the community surrounding Cameron Village, now as 20 Modern Condos on 615 Daniels Street. We hope to invoke the same sense of energy and excitement in each of our homes and embed residents whole-heartedly into the coveted surrounding community.
Truly timeless, the Stephenson still represents a contemporary and connected lifestyle unique to the Cameron Village neighborhood.
